Blake has recorded “The Prayer” with Rebecca Newman…. to be released on her new CD “Dare To Dream” very soon 🙂  Live orchestra with original songs and some lovely arias 🙂

Hoping for a March/April release!!! There will be a hard CD, a Special Edition double disc version with a DVD and will be available on iTunes.

In 2013, Rebecca has sung with Aled Jones, Russell Watson, recorded with Blake and Mary-Jess (for collborations on the album), performed the national anthems live on TV for three Rugby League World Cup Matches and achieved an internet hit with her Christmas single, which received over 100,000 hits.

Just to let you know, there will be different versions of this album available: Standard CD album, Special Edition double-disc album with a special DVD, iTunes standard, iTunes special edition. Plus other download sites too. Full info available nearer the time. I’m aiming for 1,000 pre-orders before the release week, at which point there will be more marketing with TV, radio, press etc, but the pre-orders will be what creates the base from which to work  x

Thanks for voting – did you know I’m releasing an album with FULL ORCHESTRA soon??

Posted on January 02, 2014 5 Comments

Hi everyone

Thanks for voting for me and getting me started on this journey.. Did you have a listen? 🙂

In case you’re not familiar with me, I’m a soprano from the UK with a new album out soon called Dare to Dream, featuring the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the world renowned Paul Bateman. It feautres some well known covers (operatic arias, musiclas, folk, film etc) and also some brand new, original music, some of which is written by me!

Things are very exciting at the moment and I’m looking forward to releasing the album in the spring, which will be my first chart eligible release (specifically, it also qualifies for the official classical charts). I have sold over 15,000 albums so far, not bad for an indie, and in the process raised over £11,000 for charity.

If you’re interested, please find out more about me at:

I hope you and your friends will enjoy listening to my music and would like to be part of my exciting journey.

Lots of love and happy new year!

OPM classics soar in Blake’s significant new album

By

533x533xBlake2.

It was such a treat to see Ryzza Mae Dizon work her way out of what she described as “nosebleed” moments when the Brit Award-winning vocal trio, Blake, graced the precocious tyke’s GMA 7 morning show six days before Christmas—a visit that marked the UK crossover-pop group’s fifth trip to the Philippines.

The dashing threesome made up of tenors Ollie Baines and Humphrey Berney and baritone Stephen Bowman didn’t just get instant Tagalog tutorials from Ryzza, they also sang Alon’s videoke staple, “Pusong Bato,” with her! (Former member Jules Knight, who made show biz headlines when he “went out” with KC Concepcion two years ago, has since left the group to pursue an acting career via the medical drama series, “Holby City.”)

Blake’s recent visit was particularly eventful, because they were here to promote their latest recording, “The OPM Album,” a six-track collection that is significant because, like David Archuleta’s hefty “Forevermore” compilation, it isn’t everyday that we hear foreign acts covering Pinoy tunes—it’s almost always the other way around!

If Archuleta chose to do away with vocal acrobatics in his spare but pristine remake of Louie Ocampo’s “You Are My Song,” first popularized by the show-stopping versions of Martin Nievera and Regine Velasquez, Blake retools the well-loved ballad with opulent harmonies, gracefully complimented by the flawless vocals of “Miss Saigon”-bound Rachelle Ann Go.

Zippy revival

500x280xann-go-600x337.jpg.pagespeed.ic.Y07rddsZCu

The hard work of learning Tagalog lyrics phonetically is evident in the zippy Hotdog revival, “Manila” (they studied Filipino in London for two months), while Ogie Alcasid’s “Kailangan Kita” (with Filipina West End star, Joanna Ampil) showcases the complementary strengths of their powerful voices—from Berney’s operatic tremolando to Baines’ pop-like trills and Bowman’s low, masculine timber. But, there are distracting, awkward stresses in “Sa Isip Ko.”

As expected, Blake oozes with confidence in English-language tracks, like Ric Segreto’s “Don’t Know What To Do (Don’t Know What To Say)” and Basil Valdez’s gorgeously rendered “Say That You Love Me,” which is more dramatic and voice-appropriate for Stephen’s sumptuous baritone!

What do the boys find appealing about recording Filipino tunes? Humphrey explains, “Singing the love songs of a very romantic nation is wonderful! The lyrics are deeply emotional, which we naturally connect with as performers.”

The OPM recording couldn’t have come at a better time: “Everytime we visit the Philippines, we continue to be touched by everyone’s warmth and kindness,” shares Baines. “We dedicate this album to those affected by the super typhoon, praying that our songs bring them some happiness and hope!”

Vocal trio Blake return to the region with their Live In Concert tour for 2014.

The singers’ harmonies and rat pack banter has earned them a fan base around the world and they will be bringing their sound to South Shields on March 30.

As well as classic songs from their three previous chart-topping and award-winning albums, Blake are looking forward to performing songs from their latest album Start Over.

In November Blake announced their partnership with UK charity Walking With The Wounded, starting with the launch of a charity single. The song, To The Sun, has been adopted by Walking With The Wounded as its official anthem.

“To be working with Walking With The Wounded and have our song as their official anthem is a great honour” says Humphrey Berney.

“To be able to help raise awareness and funds through our music and involvement with Walking With The Wounded is very special and rewarding.

Blake’s most recent album Start Over, is a collection of contemporary harmony pop featuring original songs and a few covers, including Paul McCartney’s Beautiful Night and Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love.

Having formed in 2007, recording and performing as a classical group, Start Over is Blake’s first pop album and sees them embracing the new challenge.

Blake play Customs House, South Shields, on March 30. For tickets, Tel. 454 1234.

Vocal trio Blake prepare to hit Llanelli’s Ffwrnes as part of Live In Concert tour
By Llanelli Star  |  Posted: January 15, 2014VOCAL trio Blake are preparing to hit Llanelli’s Ffwrnes theatre as they return with their Live In Concert tour for 2014.
Blake will provide an evening of music and entertainment and promise to deliver stunning harmonies and rat-pack banter, which have been entertaining audiences around the world.
Speaking to the Star, group member Stephen Bowman said: “We had a big tour there last year and had a little bit of time off over the last two of three months.
“We travelled overseas in Asia, America and Russia and it’s nice now we are back in the UK.
      Classic
“It will be the first time we have performed in Llanelli, we have been to Wales before and have had the chance to perform at great venues like St David’s Hall in Cardiff but for no particular reason we have not been back in Wales for a while.
“We will be staying the night in Llanelli. After the show we will be going out for a few drinks and it will be nice to meet the people who have come to see us for sure.”
As well as performing classic songs from their three previous chart-topping and award-winning albums, they are looking forward to performing songs from their latest album Start Over.
It is a collection of contemporary harmony pop featuring original songs and a few carefully selected covers, including Paul McCartney’s Beautiful Night and Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love.
Having formed in 2007, recording and performing as a classical group, Start Over is Blake’s first pop album and sees them embracing the challenge.
Inspired by vocalists such as the Bee Gees, Boyz II Men and The Beach Boys, their live set list has expanded to include more and more contemporary material.
The group discovered that the strength of their vocal arrangements and four part harmonies allowed them to interpret a widening range of songs.
The reaction from audiences has reinforced their belief that they were creating something special.
“As I understand the venue (Ffwrnes) is nearly sold out — probably because we have not been in Wales for a while,” Stephen added.
“The support is overwhelming and we are looking forward to coming and entertaining everyone.”

Blake: Mabuhay, hello and welcome! Fancy a challenge? We’ve never seen this site before, but it looks like fun. Every artist gets their own page, on which you can leave votes, the more votes we get the higher up the ranking we go. Reach the top and the artist is given $10,000 towards their next album. We’re making album No.5 this year, so this would be handy for us! So, up for a challenge?

      https://artistsignal.com/thebandblake

ArtistSignal is a free social music platform allowing listeners to vote for a Top Artist each month. We give the Top Artist at the end of the month $10,000. This allows listeners to propel talented artists to the top of our platform and gives artists an entirely new avenue to grow their fan base.

Another $5,000 is split between all remaining artists based on the amount of votes they receive during the month (excluding the #1 artist). Voters can earn rewards directly from artists just by voting!

Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers

REVIEW: “CONQUERED BY SONG AND HARMONY” BLAKE IN CONCERT
Special Guests: Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers
      Y Ffwrnes
      Saturday 1st February
There was high expectation for the night arranged by Theatrau Sir Gar and Loud Applause Productions. International singing phenomenon Blake were coming to Wales and joining forces with special guests the acclaimed young Welsh voices of the Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers. The powerful line up set the bar high. The sell-out audience were not to be disappointed, only those on lengthy ticket waiting lists.Blake captivated the audience from first song to last, bathing the audience with a repertoire of popular and easy listening. Arrangements of solo, unison and layered blended voices gave a much loved life and sensitivity to a warm repertoire of classic and popular songs. The audiences clearly adored every note and harmony.Moon River, She, Nella Fantasia, Hallelujah, She was Beautiful, Time to Say Goodbye – Blake’s renditions captured the hearts of the audience. Between songs, the audience enjoyed the ‘Blake banter’ – light humour both on stage and with the audience – developing a warm rapport between all.In perfect musical companionship, the young stars of the Hywel Girls’ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers brought a new dimension to the night under the direction of John Hywel Williams. Despite their young age, the Hywel singers hypnotised the audience with their stage professionalism and discipline with songs from Les Miserables and a dance-sharp fun rendition of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.An unequivocal highlight – the joint performance of Nessum Dorma by Blake and the young choristers. This was Nessun Dorma like no other. The vocal skills of Blake, blending with the youthful passion of the Hywel singers, brought new and exciting life to this much loved song. Tears came to eyes. Audiences jumped to their feet. Regrettably, the audience’s passionate cries for repeats went unheeded but the experience was magical. BLAKE Return in Live in Concert Tour

      Blake February (275 x 270)

Vocal trio BLAKE return with their ‘Live In Concert’ tour for 2014. Touring the length and breadth of the UK BLAKE will provide an evening of great music and entertainment from these singers whose stunning harmonies and rat-pack banter have been entertaining audiences around the world. As well as classic songs from their three previous chart-topping and award-winning albums BLAKE are looking forward to performing songs from their latest album ‘Start Over’.

In November BLAKE announced their partnership with UK based charity Walking With The Wounded starting with the launch of a charity single. The song, ‘To The Sun’, which was written by songwriter Alistair Griffin, has been adopted by Walking With The Wounded as its official anthem with 50 pence from the sale of each single donated to the charity. BLAKE debuted ‘To The Sun’ in Trafalgar Square at the South Pole Allied Challenge send off in front of Prince Harry and the expedition team members.

Blake Walking with the Wounded (275 x 275)

BLAKE’s association with Walking With The Wounded will include a range of activities through 2014 including participation in some of the charity’s challenges as well as promotion and fundraising throughout BLAKE’s UK tour dates and performances at Walking With The Wounded events.

“To be working with Walking With The Wounded and have our song as their official anthem is a great honour” says Humphrey Berney. “To be able to help raise awareness and funds through our music and involvement with Walking With The Wounded is very special and rewarding.

BLAKE’s most recent album ‘Start Over’, is a beautiful collection of contemporary harmony pop featuring stunning original songs and a few carefully selected covers, including Paul McCartney’s ‘Beautiful Night’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’. Having formed in 2007, recording and performing as a classical group, ‘Start Over’ is BLAKE’s first pop album and sees them embracing the challenge. The change in musical direction is in fact a natural progression forBLAKE.

Inspired by great vocalists such as the Bee Gees, Boyz II Men and The Beach Boys, and having toured almost continually since 2009’s ‘Together’ (their third album), BLAKE’s live set list has expanded to include more and more contemporary material. The group discovered that the strength of their vocal arrangements and four part harmonies allowed them to interpret a widening range of songs and the reaction from their audiences reinforced their belief they were creating something special.

BLAKE’s worldwide status continues to grow as the band take their music to important new territories and return to the Philippines where they are hugely popular. Their third album ‘Together’ topped the charts in the country last year and the group are putting the finishing touches on a new album specifically for the Philippines including a number of tracks sung in Tagalog, one of the Philippines’ predominant languages. In the UK the Filipino fan base is just as strong as proven when the band took to the stage at Barrio Fiesta 2013 to a crowd of 60,000 Filipinos.

Have you seen my most recent post featuring @TheBandBlake ??http://vanityfairest-x.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/the-band-blake.html
The other evening the company I work for (hence the beauty therapist uniforms) sponsored an event at the local theatre, it was to see a band called Blake. I had heard of them a few times before but never their music, why I hadn’t before is beyond me. They are incredible! They are a mix of eclectic classical & pop songs with rich harmony vocals, they sing a complete range of songs from Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars to Giacomo Puccini – Nessun Dorma. The whole time I was sitting there in complete awe, they gave me goosebumps! (You know that it’s the real deal when this happens) I would even go as far as saying that their singing is the best thing to ever pass through my little ears – they really were breath-taking! They have a wonderful presence surrounding them. Blake are not only attractive, astounding singers, with a great sense of humour but they spend a huge amount of their time supporting several charities – Help For Heroes, The British Legion & MIND to name a few. It’s always that much more enjoyable when you know it’s going towards a charity that’s close to your heart isn’t it? The only thing that I wasn’t very impressed with, was that they didn’t serenade me! ;)Now I rarely get excited over singers/bands (except Beyonce of course) & it does take something pretty special for me to rave about it – I’ve just done a blog post on these lovely chaps so that’s saying something huh? If you think classical music isn’t ‘your thing’ just have a listen as Blake will probably change your opinion, very much like mine & I’m now a huge fan! Please go & check these out as they really are spectacular

A one-night charity gala concert will be held March 2, 2014, at the West End’s Queen’s Theatre to benefit the Philippines Typhoon Appeal, with all proceeds going directly to the Disasters Emergency Committee, which brings together 14 of the U.K.’s leading aid charities to raise money to reach those in need quickly.
Presented under the umbrella title You’ll Never Walk Alone – The West End Unites for the Philippines, the evening will feature Julie Atherton, Joanna Riding, Michael Xavier and Hugh Maynard, as well as Filipino-born singer Joseph Apostol, a quarter finalist on the BBC’s “The Voice” who is soon to play John in the West End return of Miss Saigon, and Filipino-born classical pianist Emmanuel Vass. The concert will also feature an ensemble of Filipino performers and an onstage band. The event has been instigated by the U.K.-based theatre Filipino community, many of whom moved to the United Kingdom in the 1990’s to take part in the original production of Miss Saigon, produced by Cameron Mackintosh. In a press statement, Mackintosh commented, “The Philippines have been a special part of my life ever since Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil and I first went there 25 years ago to cast the original production of Miss Saigon. As well as being an exceptionally talented nation, the people we have met are also warm, generous and good-hearted human beings who have become our friends the world over. The recent terrible natural disaster there has affected so many people and along with the international aid, I am only too happy to offer the use of the Queen’s Theatre for a fund raising performance led by stars of the Philippines and the West End to help gather as much money as possible for those in desperate need.”The event is is produced by Paul Spicer and Matt Firth for Stage Acts Productions with the support of Delfont Mackintosh Theatres. Spicer commented, “In such dire situations we often feel helpless, but through entertainment and celebration of the Filipino people’s resilience, we can make a difference. This will be a truly one-off event rooted in hope and inspired by the Filipino spirit and vivacity. Disasters like this may often seem a million miles away from our reality, but when a crisis occurs it affects humanity as a whole. By lending our efforts to this appeal, we are expressing loyalty not only to the people of the Philippines, but to humankind.”To book tickets, contact the box office on 0844 482 5164, or visitwww.westendunites.com for more details.

Blake and Cortes in South Africa June 2014

The Brit Award winning and nominated, BLAKE joined by popular opera star CORTES-four of the most gifted male vocalists in the world, will come together to bring to South Africa, four concerts combining the very best of Opera, classical, musicals and pop harmony. Some of the best loved classical cross over music ever written, masterfully arranged and expertly performed, to create a magical evening. Mixing pop, rock and classical anthems with rich harmony vocals, British ‘boy band’ BLAKE launched their first album in 2007. The public embraced their debut album immediately, with over 100,000 copies being sold in just three weeks and earning the group their first Gold Disc. The music industry followed in early 2008, when the album received the prestigious Brit-Award for Album of the Year, a huge honour for a group still less than a year old.

      blake-cortes-landscape-update

Since that time their music has achieved remarkable success. Their upbeat version of ‘Swing Low’ was chosen as the Official Anthem of England Rugby for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. In 2008 their highly anticipated 2nd album, And So It Goes was released and went straight in at number 12 in the UK pop charts and Number 1 in several classical charts around the world.

Joining BLAKE on their debut South African Tour, is the ‘James Bond’ of classical music, CORTES an Icelandic tenor that was born into a musical family and trained as a singer in Vienna, Copenhagen and London. INTERVIEW: Stephen Bowman

      of Blake

      By Echo_Bridget  |  Posted: April 11, 2014

      Echo interview photo
A great INTERVIEW with Stephen Bowman “Lovely long interview I gave for the Express & Echo newspaper, revealing a little about the chemistry of Blake and why we sing what we sing. Enjoy”
Thank you Express & Echo and Stephen:)

With more than one million albums sold, harmony singers Blake have toured around the world, but among the places they

haven’t yet performed is Exmouth Pavilion. Soon it will

be another one they can tick off the list, and Stephen

Bowman reveals to Anita Merritt the eclectic mix of songs they’ll be performing

YOUR destiny can be obvious from birth simply because of the family you’re born into, but no one could have predicted the musical path Stephen Bowman would eventually choose.

Raised by a German rock guitar playing father and a British opera singing mother, Stephen grew up surrounded by diverse styles of music.

Instead of choosing a favourite, he has found fame worldwide for a unique ability to mix eclectic classical and pop songs with rich harmony vocals as part of group Blake.

They released their first album in 2007, just six months after the line-up was completed on Facebook, and it went to number one in the UK classical album chart and was a top 20 in the pop chart. The album then received Album of the Year at the Brit’s in 2008, and the band was still less than a year old.

This year the band will release its fifth UK album, and touring remains one of their biggest passions. Despite being able to pack out huge venues, Blake have chosen to include some smaller theatres and among them is Exmouth Pavilion where they will be heading on Saturday, April 26.

“The Exmouth date is towards the end of the tour so by that point we will be very good!” assures Stephen during a brief break during the tour. “It will be our first time there although I know it well because as a kid I used to travel along the coast quite a lot with my parents and my two brothers and sister on holiday. This time though I won’t be wearing very short shorts and carrying a bucket and spade. I suppose I could but I would get more odd looks than usual!”

Revealing what fans can look forward to hearing, Stephen says he wants to wow people with many different genres of music and how they link them all together.

“The music is a mixture of everything from pop to rock and classical to musicals,” he explains. “It’s a brand new show and we have five albums to choose from which means it’s increasingly difficult to choose which ones to put in.

“The songs are linked with very, very funny banter which people have started to hanker after more than the music. When we started touring years ago we realised we had girls in the audience who come along to listen to the love songs, and had their poor partners with them so we started to talk to the guys in the audience and give anecdotes about what we do and travelling around the world. Now it’s as big of a part of the show as the music itself so we hope when guys come along they don’t feel too tortured!

“We sing what a lot of people regard as quite British music with a choral slant. It’s harmony music but inspired by the fact we come from a classical background.

“We’re British and we’re proud of what we do and it always gets an amazing response wherever we go in the world.”

The journey to success has not been entirely smooth running for Stephen who was initially picked out of a school assembly when he was 14 for singing too loudly. He was urged by the head of music to study classical voice and academic music.

Later he was encouraged to audition for the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and against all the odds – including not being able to read music – he was one of just nine male singers to gain a place at the world famous college out of more than 4,500 applicants. He also took the record for the youngest male to ever get a place.

After nearly a decade of trying to get into the music industry, with many knock backs, Stephen’s dream finally came true when he and fellow college friend Oliver Baines formed Blake. The quartet was completed by an appeal on Facebook and within 24 hours they had been signed by Universal.

“We’ve all had different ways of getting to where we are vocally,” says Stephen. “Performing with bands was my way of getting into music. I sang pop and rock where as the other guys had more choral traditions. When we came together we mixed the styles together which are pulled together by our love of harmony. We put unusual types of music against each other. One minute we can be singing Nessun Dorma and then Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. We must be the only group in the world who would juxtapose songs like that, but ultimately they are all linked by romance and love.

“At first we were compared with likes of Il Divo which wasn’t a bad thing as they have done brilliantly, but we we’re not them. We’re not opera singers who sing pop. We are a British harmony group who enjoy that type of music.

“You wouldn’t find Il Divo doing covers of U2. We had our own niche and when we became independent a more contemporary harmony sound came out.”

The band has gone on to achieve many triumphs, including their upbeat version of Swing Low being chosen as the official anthem of England rugby for the 2007 Rugby World Cup; performing at Dame Shirley Bassey’s 70th birthday party; and performing for royalty.

“You have to enjoy it while you can,” reflects Stephen. “The music industry is a really tough place and you can fall out of favour. The main thing is to have a lovely family around you and very good friends to keep you down to earth.

“One of the biggest highlights from the last seven years was sitting in the audience at the Royal Albert Hall at the Classical Brit Awards in 2008. We were nominated for best album and won. My memory is very hazy, probably because we celebrated so much afterwards!

“To then get nominated again in 2010 was awesome because we had started our own record label. We became the first independent group to be nominated for a Brit award, and again we couldn’t believe how lucky we were.”

The line-up of Blake has changed since its formation, but today’s current members are now a solid unit who all want to enjoy a long future together.

“We have struggled with ‘actors’ being in the group who wanted to go back to acting,” admits Stephen. “None of us in the group now have acting aspirations. I’m probably the worst actor in the world!

“When you have a band change it’s an opportunity for change and to do something different.

“We spend around 300 days together a year. It’s a lot but luckily we all equally have a very particular musical vision so we don’t fall out on a creative basis and we have a similar sense of humour. We are one of those very rare groups who get on most of the time.”

Blake have the release of their fifth UK album to look forward to in September, offering a ‘back to their roots’ sound. “It’s Blake unplugged in a way because it’s taken away the orchestra and focuses on the voices,” says Stephen who also enjoys songwriting. “We are guys who don’t like sitting still or treading water. Blake has achieved a lot, but in real terms we’ve only achieved a quarter of what we hope to. We are seven years young.”

For the time being the band’s focus remains its current tour.

Stephen says: “I love performing and it’s when I feel the most relaxed. Off stage I’m the type of person who would never get up on the dance floor. I’m not in any way an extrovert, but when I go on stage I turn into my stage character which is very outgoing, jokey and silly.” I don’t take myself seriously or try to be cool or sexy. If I did I would slip up, like on a banana skin.”

There’s also nothing cool about Stephen’s backstage antics before a concert. “The last thing I do before I go on stage is take a big swig of tea. I don’t do anything crazy.”

Tickets for the concert, starting at 7.30pm, cost £22.50. Call 01395 222477 or visit ww.ledtickets.co.uk

May be best singer win ;)New gig for BLAKE with ‘gig’ rowers
      09/04/2014
Internationally acclaimed band BLAKE will be getting a taste of traditional Cornish life ahead of their show at Truro’s Hall for Cornwall on Sunday 27 April, when they join the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA) at Charlestown for a spot of rowing followed by refreshments at the recently refurbished Rashleigh Arms.
The three-part vocal group will be competing against each other in three traditional Cornish pilot gigs, Defiance, Petroc and Vilt.
The boys will then join some of the CPGA membership for a pint of Tribute and a pasty back at the Rashleigh Arms. This is where the Charlestown gigs are stored in the boat shed and where the club meets socially every week.
Humphrey from BLAKE said: “Having a communal love of water sports and the sea and having seen some pictures of the Cornish pilot gigs we are really looking forward to getting out onto the water and having a go, let the race begin! After all the effort of the race, we’ll be looking forward to a pasty.”
Cornish Pilot Gig Racing has evolved over a number of years from what was once a way of earning a living. Throughout the history of the pilot gig there have been heroic rescues with the gig acting as a lifeboat and jobs in pilotage, and now gig racing is a rapidly expanding sport, in the South West and further afield.
The sport’s official body, the Cornish Pilot Gig Association, is sponsored by St Austell Brewery’s flagship Tribute Ale. The Tribute Series takes place every year, this year it will hopefully be taking place in June where all CPGA clubs are given the chance to compete against each other.
Chairman of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association, Jason Nicholas said: “We are thrilled that the boys from BLAKE want to have a go at this exciting sport which is so closely linked with Cornwall’s history and heritage. Rowing is a fantastic fun and accessible sport which anyone can join in with, and on Saturday 10 May we will be holding ‘come and try’ days across the country for people to see what it’s like for themselves.”
For more information about the ‘Come and Try’ days which are part of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association’s recruitment drive, please go to http://www.cpga.co.uk or contact your local club.BLAKE will be rowing with some of the CPGA membership in Charlestown at 10.30am on Sunday 27 April.Photo and filming opportunities will be available – please contact Tom Cowle at DCA Public Relations on 01208 77900 or email tom.cowle@dca-pr.co.uk for more informationhttp://t.co/bLaJSf98wq

“Those of you who know me well, will know that I’m certainly no sportsman. So the idea of rowing like crazy out in the ocean fills me with trepidation. I’ve put in an order for bright orange arm bands, an emu inflatable ring & emergency flares. Preparation is key!”

Classical pop crossover trio Blake try a new kind of gig
      By WMNjackieb | Posted: April 18, 2014
Classical pop crossover harmony trio Blake will be flexing more than their vocal chords when they head for the Westcountry next weekend as part of their UK-wide tour – they will be testing their muscles in a rowing challenge. The Cornish Pilot Gig Association have invited Ollie Baines, Humphrey Berney and Stephen Bowman to race against one another at Charlestown before their Truro show, to help put the spotlight on their recruitment drive.“We usually find it quite relaxing to come and perform in your beautiful part of the world, but I’m not so sure it will be this time,” says Ollie.“I expect this was Humph’s idea. I’ve never seen a gig , but as far as I can tell they are old rowing skips that move with the speed of a small badger. I expect we’ll be pretty tired and have blistered fingers, but I’m looking forward to it,” adds the Oxford-born and Wiltshire-raised singer, whose father is a veteran of the famous Oxford-Cambridge boat race.“My dad rowed for Oxford in 1972 – he was very young, only 18 or 19 at the time, and they were still using wooden oars. When I was at university [Cambridge] I never saw the point of getting up at 6am when I could be in bed with a hangover,” he admits. “I found music instead.”The group burst onto the scene in 2007 with their eponymous first album, released six months after the former choristers had reunited via Facebook. It went straight to number one in the UK classical album chart, as well as the pop top 20, winning Album Of The Year at the 2008 Classical Brit Awards.Since then they have been touring virtually non-stop, winning fans all over the world. They are also well-known for their charity work, forming a partnership with British based Walking With The Wounded, which they launched with the single To The Sun.The Blake repertoire has been gradually veering more towards the pop genre. Inspired by artists like the Beach Boys and the Bee Gees, their most recent LP Start Over is a collection of contemporary original songs and a few unexpected covers, including Paul McCartney’s Beautiful Night and Bob Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love.“It is a natural progression, although our live shows are definitely still a mixture,” explains Ollie, who has been singing since he was eight as a chorister at New College, Oxford and Winchester Cathedral.“It might sound a bit like child labour having to sing 25 or 30 hours a week on top of your school work, but it’s such a beautiful thing to do. It gives you an incredible foundation in musicianship for older life,” he says.“It’s like learning a language; when you’re a child your brain is like a sponge soaking it all up. I was very, very lucky to do it.”The group were recently in Washington DC to fly the flag for British culture and win some new fans across the pond. And for Ollie it was a long overdue return trip.“I went with the Winchester Cathedral choir when I was ten or 11 years old in 1994, so it was wonderful to go back,” adds the multi-talented musician who also learned the French horn and the trumpet, played in several youth orchestras, and is still a keen pianist.“I dabbled with the flute and the clarinet too, and I’m learning the ukulele at the moment – it’s a lovely little instrument to carry around.”The trio were invited to the British embassy where they performed an a cappella acoustic set to a specially invited audience, then appear live on Fox News America.“We had a great time and hopefully made an impression that is more than a little drop in the ocean,” adds Ollie. Their TV appearance in front of millions of viewers nationwide featured an interview as well as a live performance.Well known for their Rat-Pack style on stage banter, they threw in their fair share of unique British charm.“We are a variety act and we like to have a very relaxed feel to our performances. We have certain routines to link some of the songs and there is a definite flow to things.“Ultimately we just want people to come away feeling they have had an enjoyable experience,” he concludes.Read more: http://www.westernmorningnews.co.uk/Classical-pop-crossover-trio-Blake-try-new-kind/story-20966971-detail/story.html#ixzz2zGBp25Hv

      St Albans & Harpenden Review:
Blake are back on the road
      12:00am Saturday 12th April 2014
      By Rosy Moorhead

Humphrey Berney, one third of hit vocal trio Blake, is taking a well-earned break from the touring, recording and promoting that makes up the boys’ days, and, for one night only is visiting his family.

“I’m in Norfolk to visit my niece and nephew,“ explains Humphrey, known as ‘Barney’ to his group mates. “It really is important to take any opportunity to see family and friends. I haven’t been back for ages and it’s amazing how quickly they are growing up. Saying that, being woken at 6am by a small child shouting at you that he is Spider-Man isn’t that enjoyable when you have jetlag!“

Back on the road, and Humphrey rejoins his other family – Stephen Bowman and Ollie Baines – who he has been with in Blake since the group formed in 2007. The band was a four-piece until founding member Jules Knight left in 2013 to join the cast of Holby City as new doctor Harry Tressler.

“It was a shock when Jules left, as it was very sudden,“ Humphrey admits. “We had to adapt very quickly as we had live shows and so needed to rearrange songs and get used to being a three, but it has gone really well.

“It’s amazing to think it’s over a year now. After being together for so long (six years) you become very close, almost like family, so it was sad to see him go. But we often see him – in London you end up going to lots of the same events and we have been out for dinner a few times to catch up and hear all the news.“

Back in the UK after touring Asia, Russia and South Africa, Blake are on the road with a mix of some of their classic numbers with some of their newer songs, all combined with Rat Pack-style banter and stories from their world travels. And there are lots of stories to tell – performing three times for The Queen, playing the Centre Court at Wimbledon, and performing to half a billion people live on Chinese television.

Humphrey admits that tensions do sometimes get a little frayed when they’re on the road – but no more than with any ‘family’.

“We’re three individuals who spend a huge amount of time together, and we start to get tired, miss home, and little issues can seem much bigger than they are. However, it’s the sign of great friendship that after a little spat we very quickly make up.“

He continues: “It’s great to be back out in the theatres. Our shows really take people on a musical and emotional journey, and it’s great to see the range of ages that come to our gigs. We often have three generations of one family in the audience. We have such a variety of music, it appeals to a very wide range – even the husbands!“

The three members of the internationally acclaimed operatic boy band Blake enjoyed a taste of traditional Cornish life ahead of their show at Truro’s Hall for Cornwall this evening.

This afternoon they joined the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA) at Charlestown for a spot of rowing followed by refreshments at the recently refurbished Rashleigh Arms.

The three-part vocal group competed against each other in three traditional Cornish pilot gigs, Defiance, Petroc and Vilt.

The boys then joined some of the CPGA membership for a pint of Tribute and a pasty back at the Rashleigh Arms. This is where the Charlestown gigs are stored in the boat shed and where the club meets socially every week.

Community choir to join Brit winner Blake on stage in Bromley

      bandicam 2014-05-09 21-25-08-138

A community choir have been chosen to perform alongside Brit Award-winning vocal group Blake in Bromley.

Popchoir – who rehearse weekly in Chislehurst, Dulwich and Croydon – will join the trio on stage at The Churchill Theatre on Sunday, May 18.

The members of Blake all found their love of music as youngsters in various groups and choirs, so they looked to share that passion with the communities they are visiting on their tour.

Popchoir, who recently sang with heritage rock act Foreigner as well as at the Ideal Home Show, London Marathon and Olympic Park, will perform some of Blake’s well-known classic-pop songs with them and perform one tune from their own repertoire.

Popchoir are best known for featuring the music video for Josh Groban’s I Believe last year.

Founder and director Helen Hampton said: “We’re delighted that Blake has asked us to perform with them at their Bromley concert.

“As our name would suggest, we are known for our repertoire of pop songs, and so this will give us an opportunity to show our versatility as we crossover into the more classical sound of Blake.

“We’re also delighted to have the chance to sing at the Churchill Theatre which is a lovely venue and very familiar to all our members.”

Friday 16th May saw the welcome return of classical pop group Blake to the Isle of Wight, hosted by Medina Theatre.
      1st
Fresh from a recent visit to the States in March to sing outside the White House, the group are certainly used to performing in their fair share of famous venues.
While Medina Theatre may not been on the same grand scale, it still manages to hold its own as a good little theatre that can stand up to the challenge of playing host to a variety of world-class performers.
Blake tend to attract a more mature audience to their concerts, but Friday night saw younger members eagerly take their seats, indicating the trio’s increasing appeal to all ages. Their popularity has steadily increased since forming in 2007 – so far, Stephen, Ollie and Humphrey have had a number of hit albums and records in both the UK and classical charts.
Supporting the group for the night were island-based choir Voices of the Isle of Wight, as well as classical superstar, Camilla Kerslake.
Choir members Emily Scotcher and Tess Attrill were very pleased to be backing the group again:
”I’m currently taking my A-levels at present, so supporting Blake has given me a nice break from my exams. And it’s great practise for me as I’m going off to study Performing Arts in September” said Tess.
”They are such nice guys to sing with,” added Emily. “The island is a huge hub of creativity and this is a great opportunity to showcase its vocal talent.”
Blake charmed the audience with remarkably passionate renditions of popular classics. With every new song, a fresh wave of emotion washed over the audience, taking them on a journey right to the very end of the concert.
The event was made all the more special by having our very own talent perform on stage alongside Blake, showing their humble nature and passion to help and inspire emerging talent. Allowing young people to express themselves through singing should be encouraged, and this is exactly what Blake are doing.
Their charm and passion is not restricted to the stage alone. Having used their musical talents and celebrity status, the boys have become advocates for charities the world over, with a particular focus on both cancer-based charities and charities for the Armed Forces.
The importance of raising awareness and funds for these vital charities was not lost on the audience, who were noticeably moved by the confessions of the singers and their own personal experiences.
“It was moment of immense strength in the face of cancer.”The song choices also added to this, with a particular emphasis on a spectacular performance of ‘You Raise Me Up’ and ‘Hallelujah’. Aided by the ‘Voices of the Isle Of Wight’, it was moment of immense strength in the face of cancer.
It is no wonder these talented gentlemen have received worldwide acclaim and performed for the Queen herself no less than twice. There is no doubt that their talents will continue to captivate audiences and work towards making the world a better place.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!!!Gossip Guy got to interview Cortes and one of the Blake boys. Check out these exclusive Q&As with the guys, covering fame and what fans can expect from their tour to SA.
      Enjoy!

      Humphrey Berney from Blake
1st time in SA? Thoughts on the country?
No, I have been to South Africa once before. I stayed in Cape Town for a couple of weeks and then drove the Garden Route with my brother. I loved it! The beauty of the landscape, the weather, food, wine and of course the people. I am really looking forward to coming back. What can fans expect from the show?
I think it will be a great musical and quite emotional experience. Both Blake and Cortes will be singing a mixture of songs but many will be powerful, emotive tracks. In between the singing we love to have a bit of fun and a chat so hopefully you will come away having had a laugh as well as being musically inspired…What favourites will we hear?
Many – if you are film lover, there’s tracks by the great Ennio Morricone, operatic tracks like Nessun Dorma and some lighter stuff like She by Charles Aznavor and some Beach Boys. There will be something to suit everybody’s tastes. We will of course be combining all our voices in some duets which will be exciting – Blake and Cortes is quite a combination. You’ve performed for many famous people – who stands out?
Being a Brit, performing for the Queen is always a highlight and something we have been lucky enough to do on quite a few occasions. Singing at Buckingham Palace is one I will never forget.Who would you like to still perform with (dream collaboration)?
Elton John. We saw him in concert not that long ago and he is still so great. I think it would be a great mix of voices and styles and we all love his music.Best tip for handling fame and being in the limelight?
Do not take it too seriously. Enjoy the great bits – travelling, meeting new people, some good parties but remember the fame/attention bit is all nonsense. If you can’t manage to do that then go out with someone who does not work in the industry who has their feet on the ground so they can give you a kick once in a while. You just have to look at people who care about fame eg The Kardashians.. that is where fame and celebrity become embarrassing!
      Cortes
      1st time in SA?
Yes, this is my first time in SA. I think it’s a beautiful country and very different from Iceland and therefore I’m very much looking forward to coming over. What can fans expect from the show?
I think the fans can expect a great performance from Blake and I. The programme is interesting and exciting, and we’ll be singing quite a few songs together which we haven’t had the pleasure of doing before, so we are all very excited about that. What favourites will we hear?
The programme is very mixed which we like, but there are some favorites that everyone knows – Nessus Dorma, Time To Say Goodbye, She, Hallelujah and Nella Fantasia to name but a few. You’ve performed for many famous people – who stands out?
I’ve been lucky enough to perform for Her Majesty the Queen and other Royals and since I very much like the Royal family that stands out for me. There are other famous people that I’ve performed with and for but always, when I sing, I enjoy equally much the performance and hope that whoever listens feels the same way.Who would you still like to perform with (dream collaboration)?
There are so many people I’d love to perform with. I’d love to work with Placido Domingo and Renée Fleming. We have so many great artists out there, and if and when, I get a chance to work with some of them, I know that something special will come out of it.Best tip for handling the fame and being in the limelight?
I don’t look at myself as being famous. Regarding being in the limelight or rather having attention focused on you which is the case often, then I think it’s best to try and understand that we are all the same and we should treat everyone equally.XoXo

Along with signed copies of the new album, there are 18 other special ‘pledges’ that you can order for yourself or the ones you love. Each pledge that you order counts towards the target that the band have to reach to make this album. Once the 100% mark is reached, the boys will begin to start recording and you’ll be able to hear demo tracks and watch studio videos!
Humphrey, Ollie and Stephen can’t make this album without your help. They promise you a harmony album, filled with 15 classical, pop and musical songs, mixed with lush vocals, warm strings, rich pianos and guitars. It’s going to be their best album yet, if you help them!

Just 7 days since launch and we’ve reached 20% of target, let’s push hard together and we’ll reach that 100% in no time at all, maybe even 200%…? The more pledges we get, the better the album will be, the more it will be seen!

Bake With Blake – The Great British ‘Blake Off’26 May 2014 // by: Music-News.com NewsdeskBake-With-Blake—The-Great-British-Blake-Off
Baking is the new Rock ‘n’ Roll and who wouldn’t want to make cakes with three of the dishiest men in music? The male harmony vocal group BLAKE are back and are creating a special new album for their fans across the globe. Available exclusively on PledgeMusic, BLAKE’s latest offering will be presented alongside VIP experiences that give fans the opportunity to get up close and personal with the group.Besides the bundles of signed goodies that we’re used to from the BLAKE boys, they’ve stepped it up a notch with their innovative idea of Baking with BLAKE: The Great British BLAKE Off. There will be six people in each session comprising three teams of two with a member of BLAKE heading each team collectively instructed by a professional pastry chef to teach the all important cooking skills. The lessons will be held in a central London location on week days for only £160.00 per person.”Having the opportunity to offer something so unique like this to our fans, linked directly with making our 5th album, could only have been made possible with PledgeMusic; if people want to bake with us, they’ll need to head to our Pledge site. Who knows, perhaps we end up doing more baking than music this year, but that’s the risk we’re willing to make to ensure this is our best album yet!”The classes will be held courtesy of Bake With Maria. ‘I’ve been baking since I was a child, inspired by my mother who always used to bake our breads at home,’ says Maria. ‘I want to share my secrets and teach others the very special art that is home baking.’ http://www.bakewithmaria.comThe ball is already rolling and the pledges are pouring in as fans show their utmost desire to help BLAKE create a fantastic fifth album. Once their target is reached, PledgeMusic will release the funds and recording can begin.”For eight years our wonderful Blakettes having been baking us cakes, kindly left at the stage door of every concert venue we play, or given to us in person after the show. From the Philippines, to China, Russia, the USA and UK, there isn’t a show we do where fresh cakes don’t arrive before or after the concert. We don’t eat every single one, but we try enough that we all have gym memberships to keep the kilos off!”So roll up those sleeves and get your rolling pins ready..to Bake with BLAKE.#TheBandBlake

BLAKE GIVE THEIR SUPPORT TO DIAMOND SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS

      May 26, 2014 • Music, News

Diamond School of Performing Arts choir will join Brit Award winners Blake when they perform at The Stables this August.

The acclaimed vocal group have been hunting for local choirs to join them on stage as part of their Live in Concert UK tour, and Diamond School – whose members range from eight to 21 years – are more than happy with their appointment.

“Our students are thrilled to once again be singing with Blake at The Stables theatre,” said Lucy Mann, who leads the Newport Pagnell collective.

“The venue holds a special place in our hearts having sung there over several years welcoming guests including international musicians and entertainers to John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine’s Christmas shows.

“To be singing there again with Blake is such a privilege – one we are all looking forward to so very much,” she said.

Blake’s Humphrey Berney has organised the campaign since it launched – so far they have been joined by more than 300 local choirs at shows.

“We three all owe our careers, our success and the opportunity to travel the world, to the choirs that first let us sing with them as young children and teenagers,” he said.

“Singing with a group helps build confidence and without a doubt leads on to some people stepping forward to take on solo singing careers.”

Blake and Diamond School of Performing Arts choir will be be at The Stables on August 28 and 29.

      Blake
      Friday, June 13, 7.30pm
      South Hill Park, Bracknell
      (01344) 484 123
Last time Blake performed South Hill Park in 2012 it was just before Valentine’s Day and by the end of the gig the majority of the audience were ready to send their chocolates and cards to Blake HQ instead of their other halves.
The good-looking crooners sung their way through a collection of well-known romantic hits making knees weak and hearts swoon.
They were like Michael Bublé multiplied (and with less of the American cheese) and the audience loved them.
So it’s no wonder they’re making a beeline for Bracknell on their Live in Concert 2014 tour.
“Oh yes, we’re absolutely looking forward to it,” says Humphrey Berney, chatting to Times Leisure after a whirlwind few weeks performing in New York, Washington and Europe.
“It’s always good to come back after a bit of time and people will see how we have developed.
“Hopefully it will be the same if not better.”
The band will be supported by Berkshire choir Occasions who were chosen to sing with Blake through a radio competition.
Since Blake’s last visit things have changed pretty drastically for the band as they’re now a three-piece instead of a four after Jules Knight left to take up a role in Holby City.
The remaining members – Ollie Baines, Stephen Bowman and Humphrey – are still going strong but Humphrey says things have changed.
“It’s something that the audiences notices visually but also vocally,” he says.
“A lot of people prefer us as a three which isn’t something we predicted. Being a three can allow different characters to come out more.”
Becoming a trio certainly doesn’t mean the band have lost any of their spark and the boys are eager to get out on tour and showcase some of their new material.
“What we do best is live gigs, it’s what we enjoy doing most,” says Humphrey. “Especially in the UK. It’s always exciting and with the new album coming up we are developing it and getting material ready.
“It’s going to be more of an acoustic album, not so much of the big production and a focus on the vocals, probably with piano and guitar.
“We’re going to have some original songs and some of what we do with taking covers and putting our own twist on them.”
Previously the band have put their stamp on songs like Bring Him Home from Les Misérables and Katie Meluah’s Closest Thing to Crazy and Humphrey says it is a collaborative process when deciding which tracks to cover.
“We really come together as a group and all pitch in with ideas,” he says. “The interesting thing is sometimes songs you assume would work will not work at all and then others you don’t think about but when you start adding vocal harmony in and different arrangements, it just seems to come through.
“It’s using our individual, eclectic taste in music too.”
Humphrey is also bringing one particularly interesting skill to the table for the summer tour as he’s just started learning to play the ukulele.
“It’s actually not too hard to learn,” he says. “It’s become a bit of a craze. It actually happened because my fiancée’s father loves playing the ukulele and he gave me one as a gift.”
Although he doesn’t venture too far into his romantic life (perhaps so he doesn’t disappoint the hundreds of fans who will be imagining their own Humphrey Berney wedding after the tour), he does say the date has been set for the wedding.
And when asked about his career highlight so far, his answer is one which will make all those knees go weak again.
Bearing in mind this is a band which have sung on top of the Great Wall of China, the ballroom of Buckingham Palace, 38,000 feet in the air and most recently right outside The White House, this is what Humphrey has to say:
“We were the first ever independent group to be nominated for a Classical Brit award and we performed Nessun Dorna at the Royal Albert Hall.
“My friends and family came along with my soon-to-be girlfriend, who is now going to become my wife… it was the first time she ever saw me sing.”
      Altogether now – “ahhh”.
Tickets are £25. To book call the box office or visit www.southhillpark.org.uk .

BY LUC FLOREANI ON JUN 13, 2014
Classical Brit album of the year winners, twice nominees for a Brit Award, with two gold disc albums and over 150 television appearances – Blake have sold over a million records and performed globally.
Luc Floreani talks to singer Stephen Bowman about his collaboration with the band to record a charity single in aid of the St Mungo’s homeless charity.
How has your year been so far?
This year has been very exciting – we’re just back from our first tour in America. We did a number of large concerts in New York, Washington and Los Angeles. It was very exciting to sing for the American public.
      What’s next on the agenda?bandicam 2014-06-12 21-11-02-845
Well, we have a new single out on Monday entitled “Home”. It’s in aid of St Mungo’s Broadway, the homeless charity. Then we’re off to South Africa for a multi-date tour with opera star Cortes and the Stellenbosch Orchestra. We are very excited because it’s our first tour in South Africa. Then heading home to record our 5th album.
So while the sun is shining and everyone is enjoying the summer, we will be like vampires working in a dark studio recording our new album for release in October. We are so lucky though, our fans have paid in advance for the album, so we feel a real responsibility to make it amazing. This album will be a new sound for Blake: very acoustic, although still very much about the harmonies. Blake is all about harmony!
Tell us, how did you first hear about the charity?
I believe that St Mungo’s is a name that most people know. Certainly when you walk around Covent Garden in London you see their hostels. Often it can go unannounced unless you read about it. I don’t know if people are aware of the amazing work St Mungo’s do in helping people deal with issues that have led to them being homeless.
      Homelessness is not a class
      or economic problem. It’s a
      social and support problem
Every story I have heard has been so different, but all with the same common denominator- St Mungo’s was there to support.
Why did you feel compelled to record the single?
Well, when we first heard the demo, we connected to the heartfelt and honest lyrics. Those gave us the opportunity to use voice and harmony to record a song, even though it was written for a solo voice. The lyrics really emphasize what St Mungo’s is all about – St Mungo’s is all about support.
What’s the feel of the record?
We all went to the Guildhall School of Music and The Royal Academy of Music, and we all studied classical music. That said, we all love contemporary pop music too. We were really influenced by harmony groups from the 50s and 60s like The Lettermans, The Four Tops and the King’s Singers. We hope that this new single shows our classical background, but is also a modern take on harmony and pop. Also, being harmony led, it’s really emotive.
The three members of the band are from all over the UK – Bath, Norwich and Somerset. How does homelessness affect you?
Growing up in a reasonably comfortable family environment I think it is very easy to allow stereotypes to cloud your perception of certain issues. It is amazing to hear the stories of what circumstances lead to people becoming homeless. Homelessness can affect anybody and everybody. Homelessness is not a class or economic problem. It’s a social and support problem. This is why St Mungo’s is so amazing, they don’t discriminate – if you need help, they are there.mungos-1024x357
St Mungos BroadwayDoes the song reflect the issues of the charity?
When we first heard the demo as a group we initially talked about how it linked to the charity.
The song really celebrates stability, familiarity and a secure sense of home. It fits perfectly with St Mungo’s. I know when I go home, it’s about being safe to re-energize and get ready to take on the world again.
You recently visited one of the St Mungo’s projects – what was that like?
Wow, it certainly was eye opening! I guess I believed that a hostel was a large place where homeless people were housed to keep off the streets. Hundreds of people in a large room, you know?.
I was pleasantly amazed that everyone had his or her own space, and ownership over their rooms. We also met people who had moved from there to their own rental accommodation. The hostel catered for each and every person in the way they needed help.
